Age of Empires 3 | FAQ |
 |
This Page has been viewed 315,556 times This is a FAQ for the questions that I won't want to answer over and over again.
Q: What is a "Home City" that I keep hearing about?
A: The Home City is an innovative system introduced in AoE III. Think of the colonial age, where almost all of the culture and technological innovation came from a colony's nation of origin. A player will have a Home City that will last through all their games. With the homecity you will be able to send shipments. There are many diffrent kinds of shipments. From military to economic, Even research and team research cards that will help everyone in your team.
Q: What purpose will trade routes serve in AoE III?
A: Trade routes are specific routes that allow the player to trade with natives and other colonies. The player will build outposts on the routes and send wagons to get the resources. These wagons can be upgraded to stagecoaches, and later, trains.
Q: Are there be god powers in this game?
A: No. ES experimented with god powers early on, but decided not to use them.
Q: How will a random map game start?
A: Random map games (Skirmish) or any other sort of game will always start in the age you decide. There are many diffrent options, All explained in-game. But remember in the game mode DeathMatch you will be limited to Industrial age.
Q: Will there be a focus on naval warfare?
A: Heck yes! Early in AoM's creation, fans saw pictures of massive ships, which were later scaled down for the sake of gameplay. Not this time. Ships here will be huge, expensive, and strong.
Q: What are the system requirements of AoE III?
A: Minimum system requirements are:
- Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP
- 128 MB of RAM
- Pentium 800 MHz or equivalent
- 64 MB 3D video card
- 1.5 GB of free hard disk space
- 32x CD-ROM drive
- DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card
- 56 kbps Internet connection for online play
Recommended system requirements:
- 512 MB of RAM
- 2.0 Ghz CPU
- 128 MB 3D video card
There. If you have any good questions, post them here, and I'll try and answer them and add them to this FAQ.
Q: Is there a scenario editor?
A: Yes. This opperates and functions in much the same way as the Age of Mythology scenario editor allowing the user to create not only beautifully detailed maps but also cinematics and storylines through the use of triggers.

Q. Who is the leader of the ES clan?
Strobe is the current leader; he's the lead ESO programmer. However, he rarely if ever plays online so there isn't much to see in his profile.
Q. How do I load a custom scenario in Multiplayer?
Currently you can not play custom scenarios in multiplayer. We are currently investigating the addition of this into the game.
Q. Why can I only play Supremacy or Deathmatch games but not both?
You need to make sure you have selected a home city that matches this game type you want to play. Check the select Home city screen to select the Home city you want to play, or if you need to create a new city to match the game type you want to play.
Q. Why can I not advance to the Imperial Age?
It depends on the type of game you are playing:
1. If you are playing the campaign, this age is not available in every scenario.
2. In Deathmatch Imperial age is not available, unless the game starts in, or after the age.
3. In Supremacy players should either start in Imperial or be able to advance to it normally.
Q. How do I un-pause / resume a save game?
First install the latest patch. After you patch you should be able to resume a paused game by:
* Pressing the Pause/break key on your keyboard. On most keyboards this is located near the "scroll lock" and "page up" keys. Some keyboards require a multi key combination or function key to be pressed inorder to gain the "pause/break" functionality; please refer to you keyboard or computer documentation.
* Pressing the hotkey assigned to pause/resume. By default hotkey editor assigns F7 to this function but you can remap this if you like.
* Clicking on the cancel button on the “game paused” window.
Q. Can I use my ESO HC in single player? Can I use my Single player/ LAN homecity on ESO?
NO. Your Single player/LAN home cities are completely separate from your ESO home cities.
Q. How do I delete savegames?
You can not delete savegame files from within the game. To delete them:
1. Close age 3
2. Manually browse to my documents\my games\age of empires 3\savegame
3. Select the file you want to delete and deleted it.
Q. How do I watch recorded games?
1. Place the recorded game file in your My Documents\my games\age of empires 3\savegames folder.
2. Launch the game.
3. Select Help and Tools from the main menu.
4. Click on Recorded Games
5. Select the file you want to watch and click load.
Q. How do I view screenshots?
1. Browse to your My Documents\my games\age of empires 3\screenshots folder.
2. open the file you want to view in an application that can view .jpg files.
Q. How do rotate the camera?
First turn the "rotate camera" option on in the options, then in game you can rotate using either ctrl+(left or right)arrow keys, or Shift+mousewheel.
Q. How can I map the TAB key? How can I manually edit my hotkeys?
The reason we made TAB a reserved key is that it is used to cycle between the selected unit groups in the unit selection panel. Allowing it to be remapped would cause both the cycle and the new action to happen. That said, I'm sure there are a few people don't mind this (obviously if you had previously remapped the TAB key), so you'll be relieved to know there is still a way to work around this.
When you change a key's mapping, a new entry is added to the NewProfile.xml file (in MyDocuments\MyGames\Age of Empires 3\Users). You can modify this entry.
1. Go into the hotkey editor, change the function you want to some open key and say ok.
2. Exit the game.
3. Edit NewProfile.xml
4. Look at the bottom of the file and find the proper group under "KeyMapGroups"
5. Change the * to tab (* = whatever you temporarily mapped it to.)
6. Save and close the file
7. Run the game
It's a little more complex than before, but should get you back to the most of the keys you are used to.
